Ask students to share their completed story maps or summarize the story in their own words. Debrief (5 minutes): Once the text has been completed, bring the class back together to discuss the story as a group. The story map should include the title, characters, setting, main events, problem, solution, and any connections or predictions the student made.ĥ. Independent Practice (10 minutes): Distribute story maps to students and have them work independently to fill them out while you continue to read the text aloud. Making Connections: Encourage students to make connections between the events in the story and their own experiences, other books they've read, or current events they are aware of.Ĥ. Summarization: After reading a section of the story, ask students to summarize what just happened in their own words. Prediction: Encourage students to make predictions about what they think will happen next in the story based on the information that has been presented so far. As you read, pause at certain points to ask questions that will develop the following three comprehension strategies: Modeling and Guided Practice (20 minutes): Begin reading the text aloud to the class, modeling proper reading techniques such as appropriate pacing and intonation. Write the words on the board and provide definitions and/or use them in sentences to give students context.ģ. Vocabulary Building (10 minutes): Review any unfamiliar vocabulary words in the text. Encourage them to make predictions based on the cover or title of the book.Ģ. Introduction (5 minutes): Begin by introducing today's shared reading text and ask students what they expect the text to be about. A grade 2 appropriate text chosen by the teacherġ. Objective: Students will be able to develop comprehension strategies during a shared reading of a text.
